Spencer Brownstone Gallery is pleased to present a glimpse of Things a group show featuring works by Mira Dayal, Alex Gabe, Olivier Mosset, Al Svoboda, Vincent Szarek.

There is a moment when the familiar becomes strange—when we reach for an absent step, when the reliable car refuses to start, when paper draws blood from an unsuspecting finger. In these instances, objects shed their invisibility and declare themselves, disrupting our habitual interactions and forcing us into sudden awareness of their material presence.

In the context of art objects, this transformation becomes particularly charged. An artwork that behaves predictably—the image that hangs, the statue that represents—remains comfortably familiar. But when artworks veer from convention, when they refuse to appear as anticipated, it achieves something more elusive; a quality that makes us look again at what is actually there.

The works in a glimpse of Things offer moments —partial, fugitive views, that can lead to deeper understanding of the Things’ composition as well as the conditions of the encounter.

“We look through objects (to see what they disclose about history, society, nature, or culture – above all, what they disclose about us), but we only catch a glimpse of things.” Bill Brown, "Thing Theory," Critical Inquiry 28, no. 1 (2001): 1-22.
