Opening reception: Thursday, February 6, 6-8 PM

Spencer Brownstone Gallery is pleased to announce Cause and Defect, an exhibition of painting, photography and installation including Vito Acconci, Mac Adams, Mark Harris, Cameron Jamie, Sermin Kardestuncer, Rebecca Quaytman, Daniel Terdoslavich, and Chris Schiavo.
Cause and Defect aims to bring together various inventions and theories by artists who seize upon the carnivalized logic that accompanies making art. The exhibition demonstrates a range of principles used for reasoning, the mental ammunition beginning with Vito Acconci and continuing with a younger generation whose irrational and invalid approaches redefine recent contemporary art.
Defectiveness is featured as a perceptual game in Mac Adams' sliced photographs that splice into reality. Mark Harris's installation of cut-out drips defects from the language of Arte Povera. The sequential transformation of Weepie the Wee-Wee doll examines the perceptual defects between viewer and object in the work of Cameron Jamie. Sermin Kardestuncer literally threads together objects to evoke minimalism's illusory defects. Rebecca Quaytman seeks to alter the viewer's perspective suggesting a pictorial map of defection. Daniel Terdoslavich's search for reason and causality finds reconciliation with silkscreened chromatic sequences. The photography of Chris Schiavo's staged situations explore the backyard defects of domestic life.
