Sandpaper, drain pipes, plywood, wallpaper or paint bucket – since the 1960s, artists are increasingly using such simple materials from the hardware store for their work. “Raw material” sculptures, videos, photographs and installations by 36 artists presented for the first time and gives a comprehensive overview of this remarkable aspect of international contemporary art. The familiar everyday materials to develop a surprising aesthetic effects and are sometimes treated with great humor and wit. It’s not just about the reality character of art but also about the mechanisms of perception by the viewer.
