Italian artist-duo, goldiechiari is participating in the 20th Sélestat Biennial of Contemporary Art, curated by Marc Bembekoff and Julien Fronsacq. This year’s iteration is titled, Sletto & Corso in reference to the folklore and traditions of the city and in particular, focuses on the history and heritage of the city of Sélestat and the greater Alsace region.

For their contribution, goldiechiari have created another installation in their on-going series, Genealogia di Damnatio Memoriae, in this case referencing the cultural trauma of the Nazi occupation of the area.

From the catalog:
“[The] installation consists of two trees, one carved with a list of French names, the other echoing these with their German equivalents. It refers to damnatio memoriae – [the practice of removing all traces of a person’s existence, usually for political reasons] – under the Third Reich, when French signs and even personal names were replaced with German ones.”
