Exhibition

Opening Reception: January 27, 6 – 8 pm

The Spencer Brownstone Gallery is pleases to announce a group exhibition entitled Burglar.
The show brings together a range of artists whose work seemingly has nothing in common except that their work has remained in out consciousness. The exhibition is a curators dream, and perhaps an artists worst nightmare. Instead of having visits with the artists, we have simply asked for the keys to their studios. In most cases they have been given less than 24 hours notice of the “break in” in order to try to see the work in the least contrived state possible. In some instances, work has been taken from artists who were discovered by us in studios adjacent to a selected artist. The artists were then asked to go away while we selected the work we wanted to “steal” for the show. Pleas not to show work that seemed disparate of from different time frames were ignored. As a matter of fact, some artists were chosen because their work so defiantly resists categorization. No artist sees the chosen works again until the exhibition opens.
This was not an easy exhibition to put together. Even with some willing participants, we were met with treachery and deceit. Hidden works had to be ferreted out. Enemies have been made. But it was all worth it and if asked, we would do it all over again. We invite you to come and see the “goods”.
