Tessa Farmer’s complex and detailed tableaux and animations are crafted from found organic materials and objects, including tree roots, dried insects and taxidermied animals. Together they create an ongoing and painstaking depiction of a vicious race of microscopic skeletal beings. Called ‘fairies’ by the artist, they act out a fantasy drawn from literature, legends and her own imagination. Far removed from the Victorian notion of fairies as benign beings, Tessa Farmer’s miniature winged creatures are predators, waging war on each other and the animal kingdom they inhabit.
